The HBCU Giant We Lost This Black History Month 🖤
Plus enrollment is surging, Howard is winning, and opportunities you can't miss.
100 years ago, Dr. Carter G. Woodson launched Negro History Week — the seed that grew into what we now celebrate as Black History Month. And this February, that centennial hits different.
We lost a giant. We watched HBCU athletes make history. And we saw our institutions continue to grow, get funded, and demand their place at the table. That's the HBCU story — resilient, excellent, and unapologetically Black.
This month's roundup honors all of it. Let's get into it. 🖤

🕊️A Giant Has Left the Building
Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr. — NC A&T Class of 1964 — passed away on February 17, 2026, at the age of 84. And if you know HBCU culture, you know exactly what that means.
He didn't just attend an HBCU. He became one of the most powerful examples of what an HBCU can produce. A student activist who helped lead the Greensboro sit-in movement. A presidential candidate who ran — twice. A man who spent decades brokering partnerships between corporate America and HBCUs to open doors for the next generation.
NC A&T Chancellor James R. Martin II said it best — Jackson was an "international force for equality" who proved that student activism could change the world. That's Aggie made. That's HBCU built.
HBCUs across the country — from Howard to Morehouse to Spelman to Clark Atlanta — are honoring his legacy this week. And as we celebrate 100 years of Black History Month, his life reminds us why these institutions matter so deeply.
Rest in power, Reverend. The movement continues. 🖤

🏊🏾 Howard‘s swimmers are built different
The Bison men's swimming and diving team just captured their third NEC Championship in four years — this time at the SPIRE Institute on February 21. Three titles in four years. At an HBCU. In a sport where Black athletes are historically underrepresented.
This is what HBCU excellence looks like when nobody's watching. Until everybody is.

HBCUs Are Growing — and the Numbers Prove It
A new report from Higher Ed Dive breaks down why HBCU enrollment is surging while traditional institutions are struggling to fill seats. Culturally affirming environments, high-profile alumni, and a renewed sense of pride are driving students home.
