What the Tuskegee Dress Code Debate Says About HBCUs Right Now

Okay, let's talk about it.
If you've been anywhere near HBCU social media this summer, you already know: Tuskegee University's new dress code has the whole culture talking. 👀
Here's what's actually going on.
This fall, Tuskegee is rolling out new dress code guidelines. Business suits and dress shoes for business meetings. No bedroom shoes, bonnets, durags, or revealing clothing in classrooms, dining facilities, or official university events (religious, medical, cultural, and university-approved exceptions apply, to be clear).
President Dr. Mark A. Brown went on CNN August 1 to defend it himself. His case? This prepares students for professional spaces before they ever leave campus. And it's landing as Tuskegee welcomes its largest incoming freshman class in 32 years.
But real talk: not everybody's convinced.
Critics say the policy reaches too far. Banning durags and bonnets isn't about professionalism, they argue. It's about policing culture.
And this part hits different: this was never really about the clothes. It's about who gets to define "professional." And what HBCUs owe the students navigating that question.
Then, this month, the story took a turn.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. said "we got you." 👏🏾 The sorority donated more than 1,000 pieces of professional clothing and $5,000 to Tuskegee's Golden Tiger Community Closet, announced at its 50th Southern Region Conference in Atlanta.
The Closet's been giving students free access to interview and workplace-ready clothing since 2023. Now? It's expanding.
And that's the part worth sitting with.
Whatever you think about the policy itself, Delta Sigma Theta's response is a reminder of what HBCU community actually looks like. When there's a gap, we don't just debate it online.

Urban Outfitters just dropped its first-ever back-to-campus commercial, "All Together Now." And Grambling State University's World Famed Tiger Marching Band? Part of the cast. 🔥
The commercial dropped August 12. Filmed inside Rutgers University's 52,454-seat football stadium. 76 students. More than 10 universities. Marching band members, dance teams, creators, and college football players, all building into one massive campus party.
It's UO's biggest advertising push yet for the back-to-campus season, running across social media, in stores, and on connected TV.

📈 Alabama A&M hits a record 7,808 students
Alabama A&M just posted its third straight year of record enrollment — 7,808 students, up 7.03%. The largest class in the university’s 150-year history. “This growth is not by chance. It’s the outcome of a deep commitment to student success,” said President Dr. Daniel K. Wims. Let that sink in.
